'Nick and Douglas transformed our very boring back garden into an amazing spectacle. We now have a patio, artificial lawn for our dog and grandchild to play on, and a lovely seating area at the bottom of the garden. Their choice of plants was incredible - colours, varieties and types of flowers and foliage. The amount of wildlife the garden now attracts is wonderful! We would recommend Nick and Douglas to anyone wanting to redesign their garden.' - Jane & Chris London W13.

This was a great garden to design. It is in fact, for London, quite a wide plot, but a relatively shallow one. The challenge was to create a feeling of depth whilst accommodating a large terrace that leads from the newly built kitchen diner.

The garden also had to take into account the three generations, (and a dog!), who all use the garden on a daily basis. The brief was for a low maintenance garden with plenty of flower and foliage interest that would form the perfect backdrop when viewed from the house.

As a family that loves to entertain and enjoys the outdoors, the top terrace had to be of a sufficient size for not only a large table seating 8-10 people, but also had to accommodate casual seating and a BBQ. 2 large planters with mature bamboo were placed each side of the terrace to give an added sense of privacy.

We designed a lower terrace to help create a ‘destination’ and a focal point that also gave a feeling of depth to the garden. This wide lower terrace has a classic Lutyens bench that catches the early morning and late afternoon sun. Evergreen jasmine and honeysuckle ensure this a fragrant place to sit from early summer to late autumn.

An integrated watering and lighting system was also installed. The lighting provides a dramatic vista when viewed form the kitchen diner and the large top terrace.

The garden has an automatic watering system as well as an integrated lighting system which can be seen in the two pictures below, which were taken just after the garden was planted:
