“Nick and Douglas have done a wonderful job with our front garden. Our brief was to lift our drab bungalow frontage and really bring a garden to the front garden rather than a glorified parking space.
We have very limited knowledge of gardens but Nick and Douglas came up with designs and ideas that are really working. The work and team was extremely efficient and managed really well by Nick and Douglas to the set budget we had discussed.
We get pleasure from the lush garden which is growing and improving every day and have had so many compliments and admiring glances. I would have no hesitation in recommending them” - Charlotte, W13
We had great fun designing this garden for this lovely young family. Whilst the client’s brief was to create a generous parking space for the car, they also wanted to have well planted borders that would make the frontage of the property feel like a real garden in its own right and not just a place to park the car.
The design we created had a paved area at its centre, with a resin bound drive to the left and a large planted border to the right. A centre bed was created, directly opposite the front door, which was designed to be seen when first exiting from the front door. By planting this with a standard Acer tree, it also offered privacy from the street.
The central paved area that leads to the front door is surrounded by wonderful foliage that provides year-round interest. With its off-centre entranceway from the street, the visitor can enjoy the borders before they arrive at the front door of the property.
The low brick wall to the front of the garden with open access to the paved area defines the boundary without obstructing the view of the generously planted borders.
As the garden is north facing, shade loving plants were chosen that would provide visual and sensory interest throughout the seasons.
As with all London gardens, bin storage is always an issue, but in this garden the impact of a double bin store was reduced by painting the unit dark grey, training evergreen jasmine around its sides and positioning it in such a way as it acted as a natural divider between the drive and the rest of the garden.
The bin store was painted grey to make it blend in and evergreen jasmine, with its wonderful scent, is being trained along wires and will ensure it will be covered in foliage within a year or so.
With only 5 square meters of natural paving, generously planted borders and an entirely porous resin bound driveway – this garden is both eco-friendly and a haven for wildlife.
As with all our creations, the planting is vital to the success of the overall design. With evergreen topiary balls and winter flowering shrubs, the garden always has structure. And with the addition of shade loving foliage and trees, a fantastic tapestry has been created in each bed.
Viewed from above, the centre bed with the Yew topiary balls, the silver leaved brunnera, the mottled hardy Geranium and the purpled leaved Heuchera create the most wonderful living tapestry.
